  a old thread was bumped recently in which posters from 9 years ago raised objections to evolution basesd on personal incredulity regarding sexual reproduction.. i remember an elder in one of my old congregations saying something to the effect that "how could evolution be true, if men evolved before women...blah blah" you get the picture.. i have refreshed my memory of a chapter in nick lane's excellent book "life arising - the ten greatest inventions of evolution" and put together a summary.

  it would be great if others would add to it - cantleave, adam, tiktaalik, s&r, bohm et al?.

  here is my starter focusing on the problem with non-sexual selection.... if the driving force in evolution is the struggle of selfish genes to pass on copies of themselves to future generations, then sex seems counter-productive.

  Vdiot - I think you are on to something - certainly the Bible and Christianity in general are full of plagiarism or at least taking soemthing from another religious tradition and adapting it - rather than identifying those elements of Christianity that have pagan roots it would be easier to identify those that don't as they would be far fewer

  My biggest bugbear is the bastardisation of the word 'Truth' - something they share with the Soviets who called their propaganda rag 'Pravda' meaning Truth

  The other one is 'brother' and 'sister' to denote a special relationship of mutual indoctrination - why not use 'Comrade'?

  my mother retired from her full-time job recently and has started attending meetings again.

  she also has plenty of time to think about her wayward children, including me.

  one night, we were talking and she asked me, again, why i wasn't going to meetings.

  Is ingratitude and education inversely proportionate?

  bible describes ingratitude as one of the characteristics of last days.

  people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money ....ungrateful.... etc.

  (2 timothy 3:2) it seems this prophecy about people becoming ungrateful is having its fulfillment more than 100%.. i was watching an interview on the tv the other day.

  Good to see I was successful in stirring up debate and controversy. I don't think either the evolutionary necessity or the lucky evolutionary by-product arguments have decisively been proven correct but both sides have put forward good evidence in support of their claims and I am genuinely torn as to which is more persuasive but it has been enertaining. Interesting that the ladies want to see it is an evolutionary necessity and the men a lucky by-product. Is this because men want to believe that only our orgasms are necessary?

  Maybe we could get the JWN community to volunteer to do a controlled experiment - for those of you who have children - how many reckon that you (if you are the mother) or your partner (if you are the father) had an orgasm at the point of conception. Obviously this may be difficult to respond to exactly but it would be possible to guess based on how frequently you achieved simultaneous orgasms during the time you were convceiving. Mothers will have to own up to faking orgasms though. Based on Kate's comments about pigs it would be useful to identify multiple births (twins, triplets etc.) to see if this increases with orgasms. Of course the sample size and lack of controls makes it completely unscientific but interesting anecdotally. I would guess that I am 2/2 orgasms/birth with both births being singles. But is my response reliable? Now I realize what is wrong with my suggested experiment - men will not want to admit that they don't think their partners had orgasms when they conceived. So there will be a bias in teh results towards orgasms. Oh crap - that is why I am not a scientist.

  i'm new to this site, but i have been following the topics for some time.

  initially, it was during a deep search into the history of jehovah's witnesses, and yes, "apostate" sites.

  i was born into the organization in 1989. my father was always more inclined to the organization than my mother, and soon after she was df'ed.

  you have to find your own beliefs but please stop calling the Supreme Being you believe in 'Jehovah' - not only is it incorrect linguistically but it is too close to the WBTS mindset - take care and balance your faith with critical thinking skills and develop an effective 'high control' detector for any religious group you become interested in...

  just trying to make this discussion a bit less boring...
